When white performers put on blackface in the music halls and Vaudeville 100 years ago and more, it was not to make fun of black performers, but to pay them a compliment them by giving their audience a visual clue that they intended to make their act as edgy, fun, and exciting as what the black entertainers felt free to do. The white performers were saying that they were going to step out of the stodgy normal, and be a bit different. This truth needs to see a wider awareness.
