Great article. Street art in Oaxaca clearly relates to the revolutionary spirit which continues to live. Leftist Mexico, however, should not be confused with the faux left of the U.S. The left in Mexico is clearly pro people's rights and specifically indigenous rights. Over 90 % of Mexican people have indigenous blood. Mexican revolutionaries would not see Antifa as a legitimate ally.
Agree! The “old ones” would laugh at the new blood and totally see the antifa thugs for what they are. I would bet 99% of them are imports and not even Mexican, there only to stir the shit like in the US. Put them up against the real thing (hah, put them in Chiapas!) and they’ll find out what tough really is.
And yet the locals are the warmest and friendliest of all I’ve encountered. What you see is what you get and I found them pretty amazing.
2006 was a war zone in Oaxaca. The annual teacher's strike turned into a bloody war started by the government. The Zapatistas in Chiapas in the 90s were at war with the Mexican government for their autonomy. Antifa is a joke and has no part in Mexico. There is a community in Mexico that threw out all politicians and police and took over governing themselves. The corruption was rampant. Now they live in peace. As president Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently stated, there is more democracy in Mexico than in the U.S. He stated in México the people make the decisions. In the U S. he stated that the oligarchs make the decisions. He is 100% correct.
AMLO is 100% correct. It is quite remarkable what the Mexican people (and other LA peoples do for themselves at community level) that the rest of us would never hear about. Like the community you spoke of, one town in Guatemala cleaned out all the drugs and gang members - the mamas had had enough and waged war on them.
Never in the so-called “first world, civilized” countries would such a thing happen. Hell, our City Council is funding drag queen summer camps for children. Our province not only decriminalized hard drugs - they give them out for free.
There’s so much good can be said about “third world” places that far outstrips anything in the hellholes of “civilization”.
