Oaxaca, Mexico Street Art
Originally published via inTravel Magazine:
Owing to its inaccessible mountainous terrain, the conquistadors and other would-be conquerors have had a hell of a time over the centuries taking and holding this Southern Mexico region.
In that regard, it's much like Afghanistan.
As a result, it's maintained much of its indigenous culture, which is palpable in the streets.
Many of the street murals seem to revolve around recreational drug use – Oaxaca being notorious for its psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana crops.
But there's also plenty of artwork depicting the people and animals of the region.
Antifa is apparently active. Lots of revolutionary slogans topped off with the infamous circle-A for anarchy (the left-wing variety) are prominently displayed.
