I'm... using it the old way. When the gender of a gendered subject or object is unknown.

"There's someone over there in the garage. What are they doing?"

This is perfectly correct English and is neither woke nor pandering to "nonbinary" people.

I didn't see Dr. Strings' first name, Sabrina, until just now, so I did not know her gender.

Yeah I was just talking shit. Some people claim "they" as a singular is proof that personal pronouns shouldn't be gendered when the gender is already known.

No, that's silly. The "they/ them" use case has already been clearly defined and serves a specific descriptive purpose. You're making language less clear if you begin tacking on contrived meanings rooted in transient ideology.
