When people complain about a recent lack of decorum and civility in Congress, I remind them of the Brooks-Sumner Affair, when in 1856 Southern Democrat Senator Preston Brooks snuck up behind Republican Abolitionist Charles Sumner on the Senate floor and beat him with his cane, nearly killing him. Decorum, indeed.
