Alex Kerr's "Dogs and Demons" from 2002 did an amazing job of indicting the "just because" aspect of Japanese culture that maps directly onto the phenomenon you're stating, including an entire section dedicated to bemoaning the fixation on making everything resemble a cute anime character and "kawaii'ing" bizarre things, and especially the harm that this fixation has had on undoing Japan's more ancient stylistic traditions of grace, simplicity, stoicism, and natural beauty that defied the gaudy "make everything red and gold and as much as possible" that the Chinese court pushed on all of premodern east Asia for centuries.

I just spent an hour looking for (and failing to find) pictures to prove “wigs on babies” is something we do here at Granny Snakebite’s house. We do it because it makes us laugh. That always perplexes the baby with the wig on her head, so we laugh harder. Some things just can’t be explained until you try it for yourself.
