Man's ability to lie to oneself, to exhibit doublethink, to demonize 'the other' is both remarkable and terrifying to witness.
I lived in Germany (Hesse, Fulda then Wiesbaden) from 92-95. One of the Kasernes we left and returned to the Herms (our favorite term of endearment for the Germans) in Fulda turned into a refugee camp. This was during the Yugoslavian/Serb/Croatian war(s) and the immigrants from that mess.
It was surreal to see former Army barracks with laundry strung from windows, grass 18-24 inches high, trash everywhere; to see order so quickly turn to chaos was alarming to me.
'WTF?!?!?' I thought as I drove by the Fulda kaserne I knew so well.
Interestingly, just below the surface, the Herms maintained a rather pronounced racial suspicion of others. I won't go so far to say they were all jackbooted racists...BUT...it wasn't that far off. At the time, I was a pretty naive young Soldier who was experiencing living overseas for the first time.
It might be more accurate to recognize that suspicion of others is the norm.
I remain shocked by Germany's decent into madness. The climate madness, the willingness to bring in so many refugees during Merkel's 16 year (HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! You'd think she was a US Congressman) reign, and now this renewal of dystopian crime prevention.
