Call me a masochist (it wouldn’t be the first time), but I am of the belief -- and have been since I was a child even when I was unable to articulate why – that modern life in the developed world is entirely too materially comfortable for our own good.
Not quite up to plunging into the ocean in January but I do take a 10 minute “ice bath” (which, to me, means as cold as I can stand it without killing something). Usually with a hot cuppa and a sweater on, soaking only the lower half, mind you. Then stand for a hot shower.
I do this after every long run or race. It really does help calm everything and leech the lactic acid.
So it has benefits but like everything that’s good for you - it’s only good if you do/eat it.
The vedas are full of testimony of yogis with many of these “superhuman” abilities. Legendary Buddhist monks as well. Their theory is that nothing is beyond the ability of consciousness. I think they and you are “ on to something”.

Since I don't have a swimming pool, I've found taking cold showers in the summer helps keep me cool, also helps me sleep.
From what I've read over the decades and on reading your experiences, I totally believe you and the benefits of such bracing exercises.
However, I'm looking for experiences that test my tolerance to excessive luxury and sybaritic pleasure. lol.
unfortunately, I think we have unlimited tolerance for luxury
I'll take your word for that.
