My wife had a cousin (54 cousins, actually. Mormon family…) who met some people who got him into Ayahuasca and he started participating in the ceremonies.
A few weeks later, he was going camping with a friend, who noticed he had a large container full of diesel fuel in the SUV with him. When asked, he said it was for “you know, the purification”
They got to the camp site and his friend realized he’d forgotten some of the camping equipment and drove home to get it.
When he got back, there was the smell of diesel everywhere, and he couldn’t find his friend right away.
Then, he looked at the camping grill. Something had been cooked on it.
Closer investigation revealed that his friend had handcuffed himself to the grill, poured diesel fuel all over himself, and lit himself on fire.
There was a half rack of ribs left, and a handcuff.
My interest in experimenting with the stuff has dissipated greatly…..

I'm not saying the facts as you relayed them are wrong, but my guess is there was a lot more going on than just ayahuasca with your wife's cousin.
Yes, he was one of 54 grandkids in a Mormon family. Many of the grandkids died young of suicide though not in such spectacular fashion.
Not judging, but I have my doubts about compounds that tend to boost serotonin. That's what happens with MAO-A inhibitors.
