Reading in a shed when you were 15 immediately brought me to reading Richard Bach's "Illusions; the Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah" when I was 16 and had just been tossed out of the house by my step-dad.
This quote gave me solace: "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof."
Pretty amazing to think England produced Huxley, Orwell, C.S.Lewis, Tolkien, Chesterton all within (mostly) the same generation.
Ironically, the confluence of trends has led to the point that some of the healthiest foods available are offered at the already anachronistically named "Dollar Stores".
Although they mostly sell decidedly unhealthy crap, Mexican foods don't use GMO corn, so if you use made in Mexico tortillas, you get non GMO burritos or whatever.
If you wash them down with Mexican Coke or Pepsi, etc, you get real sugar soda. Still not health food, but heathier than HFCS in US versions.
But also, they get unsuccessful health food launches like 25 percent Aloe Vera drink, unsweetened but juice flavored energy drink with B vitamins, zinc,organic ginseng extract, organic guarana extract, organic guayusa extract and C.
Those were $1.25/4pk/12 oz cans.
And instead of jitters they gave just a relaxed feeling of well being.
Just a couple spoons of sugar and the Black Cherry flavoring was just amazing, and a commercial pop that size would have, with sugar, probably 1O teaspoons, but in the US,it would be the equivalent in HFCS, which is even worse.
OR WE CAN STOP FEEDING KIDS CORN SYRUP AND SUGAR....
